Breakdancing (breaking) is the art of dancing to hip-hop with power moves, freezes, footwork, and top rock. It's now an Olympic sport, but you can start in your living room. Each session is a creative puzzle: string moves together into your own unique style. The floor is your canvas.

How to start

  1. 1
Clear a space on a smooth floor or lay down a piece of cardboard or a yoga mat
  2. 2
Learn basic top rock — the standing dance you do before hitting the ground
  3. 3
Practice the 6-step, the foundational footwork pattern all breaking builds from
  4. 4
Work on your baby freeze — your first power pose on the ground
  5. 5
Film yourself to track progress and spot areas for improvement

Plot twists

Ways to spice this up when the basics get boring.

  • Battle a friend in a friendly cypher
  • Create a signature freeze and challenge others to copy it
  • Combine breaking with another dance style for a unique fusion
  • Practice power moves on grass first for softer landings
  • Enter a local breaking jam — most welcome all levels
ADHD notes

Short burst practice works perfectly — drill one move for 10 minutes. The creative freedom means there's no 'wrong' way to do it, and progress is visually obvious.

Fun fact

Breaking debuted as an Olympic sport at the 2024 Paris Games. B-girl Ami from Japan was one of the favorites — she started breaking at age 11.
