Urban Sketching

Draw your city like a travel journal, even if it's just the local bus stop.

Urban sketching is the art of drawing whatever's in front of you, on location. Street corners, cafés, weirdly shaped trash cans, everything's fair game. The point isn't photorealism; it's capturing the vibe of a moment before it's gone.

How to start

  1. 1
Grab a notebook and a single pen, any pen will do.
  2. 2
Sit somewhere with a view: bench, window, café.
  3. 3
Set a 15-minute timer. Stop when it goes off.
  4. 4
Don't erase. Ugly sketches are the whole point.
  5. 5
    Do it again tomorrow.

Plot twists

Ways to spice this up when the basics get boring.

  • Draw only with your non-dominant hand for a week.
  • Sketch every waiter who brings you coffee, build a gallery.
  • One color only. The weirdest one in your pencil case.
  • Sketch people's shoes instead of their faces.
ADHD notes

Immediate dopamine payoff, you see progress in 10 minutes. Great for hands that need to move.

Fun fact

The Urban Sketchers movement started in 2007 as a Flickr group. It now has active chapters in 60+ countries.
