Authentic Movement

Free-form movement exploration with inner witness for emotional expression

creativephysicalFree15 mindifficulty 2/5

Authentic Movement invites you to move freely with eyes closed, guided by your inner impulses rather than technique or external choreography. A 'witness'—real or imagined—observes without judgment, creating a safe space for genuine self-expression. This practice bridges dance, meditation, and therapy, allowing suppressed emotions and authentic desires to emerge through movement. It's profoundly grounding and can facilitate emotional release, creativity, and self-discovery without requiring any dance experience.

How to start

  1. 1
Find a safe, spacious room where you won't bump into things
  2. 2
Close your eyes and take several deep breaths to center yourself
  3. 3
Allow your body to move without planning or deciding—let impulses guide you
  4. 4
Start with gentle swaying and gradually follow whatever wants to move
  5. 5
Continue for 10-15 minutes, staying connected to breath and sensation
  6. 6
Gradually open eyes and return to stillness

Plot twists

Ways to spice this up when the basics get boring.

  • Practice with a partner taking turns as witness and mover
  • Move in nature (park, beach) for added sensory input
  • Combine with sound baths or live music
ADHD notes

The non-goal-oriented, permission-based nature is ideal for ADHD brains. No right/wrong way means pressure-free exploration.

Fun fact

Authentic Movement originated from the work of Mary Starks Whitehouse, a pioneer in dance therapy, in the 1950s.
